The Last Leafs

PROLOGUE

"Hurry! We have no time to waste!" exclaimed Spotted Leaf. All of Leaf Clan ran, trying to get to safety. Spotted Leaf looked up at the sky and saw fire bombs falling from above. Then she looked at all of the Leafs. Their faces were struck with fear. She knew thousands of Leafs were going to die. But, Spotted Leaf was going to do whatever it took to try to get her clan to safety.

More fire was swallowing up their forest home, Laefin. The spirits of Dark Clan had already destroyed so much of the Leaf's home. The forest was dark, and cold. The trees that were once abundant with bright green leafs were now stripped to the burnt, decaying branches. The wind was howling and seemed to be mourning for Laefin. Everywhere Spotted looked, she saw fire. Dark Clan's spirit creatures were coming from every direction, and no Leaf was safe standing still.

Spotted could hear the cries of her fellow leafs. "Come on! Keep going!" Spotted cried. "I-I can't run anymore..." said a Leaf weakly. Spotted turned around to see Painted Leaf lying on the burning forest floor.

Spotted ran back to Painted, tears streaming down her face. She couldn't bear to see her clan like this. In such pain, fear. "Painted," she cried. "What happened??"

Painted winced. "M-my leg... I injured it."

Spotted crouched down to Painted and looked at her leg. It had a horrible gash, and was red with infection.

"Oh my..." Spotted said, looking slightly disgusted. "There's nothing we can do now, here, lean on me!"

Painted looked at Spotted with sorrow.

"No...Please just go," Painted said quietly. "Help the others."

Spotted looked at Painted like she was crazy.

"No! I can't just leave you here!"

A flaming log fell from the tree above them and nearly knocked them both out.

"Spotted," Painted could barely speak. "Please, just go. You're going to get yourself killed."

Painted stayed silent for a moment while Spotted clenched Painted's paw in hers.

"It's my time to go anyway." Painted had tears forming in her eyes.

Spotted let go of Painted's paw. She stood up, and Painted gave her a weak smile. Spotted turned away and ran to catch up with the rest of her dying clan.

It pained her that Painted was dying right before her eyes and she walked away. She tried not think about it. Spotted had to get to the others.

When Spotted caught up with the clan - or what was left of them - she saw Cupcake Leaf using her elements to take out one of the evil spirits that was attacking her. Spotted came up behind her and finished the spirit off with a blow of her sword. The spirit exploded into ashes and dust.

Cupcake turned around to see who had helped her in the battle. "Oh my god Spotted," she said. "Where in Autaria did you go?? We were worried sick!"

Spotted thought of Painted dying on the burning forest floor. "It was Painted..."

"What about Painted? Oh god is she okay?"

Tears started to well into Spotted's eyes. "No... She was injured. She is probably dead now."

Cupcake looked at Spotted with horror. "Why didn't you bring her back? We could have helped her!"

"She wanted me to leave her," Spotted was going to be strong. "We mustn't worry about it anymore. Where are the others?"

Cupcake sighed. "That's what we needed to tell you," she said. "About 50 Leafs are lost."

Spotted's eyes grew wide. "WHAT?!"

"The smoke from the fire got thick and they couldn't see." Cupcake said quietly, knowing Spotted would be upset.

"How could you let this happen?!" Spotted said with anger.

"It's not my fault! Besides, you're the one that's supposed to be keeping everyone in order, not me!" Cupcake choked on her words.

"I WAS HELPING PAINTED. I TRUSTED YOU THAT YOU'D DO MY PART IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME."

Cupcake couldn't speak. Her eyes were filling with tears. She had never seen Spotted so angry at her before.

"There's nothing we can do about it now," Spotted said sternly, still furious. "We must keep going."

Spotted jogged ahead. Cupcake stood still for a moment, looking down at her feet.

"Come on Cupcake." Spotted said with so little emotion.

Before Cupcake could start walking towards Spotted, an evil spirit popped out and shot Spotted, right in the heart. It happened so fast there was nothing anyone could do.
